A.A.K.S – Rise of African Fashion

A.A.K.S – Rise of African Fashion

The soon to become the empire of A.A.K.S, was created by the beautiful Akosua, a Ghanaian native after a time in London,  who graduated from Kingston University London with a BA (Hons) Fashion degree and amassed an impressive resume of fashion industry experience. Her brand not only seeks to bring out the true beauty in our African culture, it also seeks to empower the women of African especially in the northern sector of Ghana.
She is currently based in Ghana, Akosua finds herself traveling to and through out Europe and Africa – Particularly Cape Town, London, Bolgatanga and Accra every few months to work with local artisans, experience the diverse culture of the continents and discover new inspirations for her brand.

Since her launch in 2015, A A K S which stands for her initials which is Akosua Afriyie-Kumi and the S stands for Siblings  🙂  has been shortlisted as an emerging designer from Africa by Vogue Italia, featured by Elle Decoration South Africa, Elle Spain, she has paneled for the Guardian UK Small Business Network and now stocks her bag collection in Anthropologie. These are quite some achievements for a 28-year-old African woman.

The bags are made by a team of skilled weavers all by hand, the raffia is twisted, dyed, dried and woven by women in the Bolgatanga region of northern Ghana. The quality of these products is truly remarkable. With the weaving done in the north and the lining and other finishing touches done in the UK.

Afriye-Kumi is passionate about ethical fashion, sustainability and how design can create employment and empowerment in Africa. Her raffia bags are a contemporary reworking of traditional West African weaving techniques. Her #DItakeover shows how she’s reviving this old craft using locally sourced natural fibers and organic dyes.

Ghana is really blessed to have these innovative and hard working women such as Akosua who seek the uprising of Ghana’s rich heritage. I have personally had the opportunity to live among the women of the north specifically Bolgatanga and Navrongo and as she Akosua describes them, they are nothing but extremely hard working and are very diligent workers. Ghana is blessed so many natural resources and Raffia is just one of them which has just recently been discovered by A.A.K.S. I say job well done to Akosua as she strives to achieve international success as a Fashion and Accessories designer.
